Probably Appropriated Tomatillo Tortilla Soup

Things that are a problem when you're a terrible photographer who also thinks it's a good idea to write a food blog:

  1. Foodgawker will reject most of your photos

  2. When they tell you why, you won't understand the critique (seriously, how is this underexposed? Isn't it too bright? Can someone explain this to me?)

  3. Sometimes, on the day you were planning on cooking during the daylight, it's slush-snowing and gray and disgusting outdoors.

All of that is an explanation for why the background on this photo is literal snow.

Things I learned last summer:

  • Attempting to can can 1,000 lbs of fruit with two and a half people is a very bad idea, even if one of you is very unemployed

  • Tiny peaches are the devil's work

  • For whole-peeled-style tomato chunks, the trick to density is letting them drain for at least three hours prior to canning.

Since I still haven't finished my undergraduate degree, I'm currently taking a two-week intensive stable isotope course. (25 and still working on a bachelor's anyone? Just me? Ok then!). Starting Monday I've been in class at least 8 hours a day, and since campus isn't all that close to home, I've been leaving in the morning carrying two meals in my purse, and returning 13 hours later with my brain completely fried. Last night, in a stress-induced fit of bad decision making, I bought three packs of sour punch straws at a gas station on my way home and ate all of them while avoiding my dishes. This morning my teeth hurt, which is perhaps unsurprising. I hate getting older. Am I going to have to actually start flossing now? Adulthood sucks.

Californians who go East for college are warned ferociously about winter, which I’ve subsequently decided is kind of unnecessary. Sure, I had to learn to dress myself properly (coats with linings? socks? what are these things?), and just this year I did manage to slip and fall on my butt twice walking to class on the same day, but overall, winter in Rhode Island wasn’t that big of a deal. [Yes, Dad, I know I only think this because I never had to shovel snow in upstate New York. I’m sticking to my story anyways. HAH!]
